The Central Kansas Mental Health Center in Salina serves 4,000 consumers and their families annually. 3,000 of these are from Saline County and the remaining 1,000 come from Dickinson, Ellsworth, Lincoln, and Ottawa counties. At this time, crisis services after hours consists of an on-call therapist who can be reached through an answering service and who can arrange for hospitalization if needed. The Crisis Hotline--a local, independent, non-profit organization--has volunteers who answer the phone. They listen to people who just want to talk. The population of Saline County is 49,301. The Mental Health Center serves five counties with a total of over 85,000 people. Since more services for the severely and persistently mentally ill are available in Salina, consumers from the surrounding area move to Salina. As a general rule 1% of the population suffers from severe and persistent mental illness. However, due to the immigration of clients towards services we believe that there are a great deal more than 490 severely and persistently mentally ill persons in Saline County.
