We have several programs involving PI members in the areas of leadership, education, training, and research. The first program is the promotion of shared leadership among members. Leadership opportunities, within organizational self-determination, include members defining their own needs, goals and methods of achieving them. Another program is education where members engage in gathering and disseminating facts to reduce stigma and discrimination, promote wellness and recovery, and increase knowledge of mental health issues within the membership, the larger community, and the human service system. Training is also a primary program wherein members develop their skills across the membership. Finally, research is an important program in that the discovery and use of knowledge has and will continue to improve PI services, the mental health service system, and the lives of individual members. PI staff and members are very active, listed below are a few of their activities: a) publishes a monthly newsletter; b) members use the services of and volunteer at the Lord's Diner; c) work at Wal-Mart and the Dollar Tree; d) convene a Schizophrenics Anonymous and Substance Abuse support groups; e) encourage volunteer opportunities by honoring volunteers with a monthly dinner and prizes; f) attend the annual CRO Network Leadership Retreat; g) complete a "consumer satisfaction survey;" h) host weekly pool tournaments; and i) seek out additional funding sources. These activities reduce isolation, increase volunteer opportunities and minimize feelings of exclusion.
